Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is pleased to announce the installation of Vinifera, a new outdoor public art sculpture by James Cameron Smith, to be dedicated on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Arts Centre. Remarks will begin outdoors at 5:15 p.m., followed by an indoor wine and cheese reception.
Inspired by the agricultural roots of Niagara-on-the-Lake and the transformative impact of the grape and wine industry, Vinifera honours the history, landscape, and enduring spirit of the community. The sculpture was commissioned through a generous donation by Paul Bosc in memory of his parents, Paul Bosc Sr. and Andrée Bosc, recipients of the 2006 Niagara-on-the-Lake Citizens of the Year award.
The project emerged through a public art selection process led by the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, with a jury representing the donor, Arts Centre’s Director and Town staff. Artists across Ontario were invited to submit concepts addressing the public art projects goals and themes. Following a review of artistic merit, feasibility, durability, and community relevance, the proposal by James Cameron Smith was selected for its strong visual presence and thoughtful connection to Niagara-on-the-Lake’s viticultural identity.
Known for creating contemporary sculptural works that blend craftsmanship with narrative meaning, Smith’s design draws inspiration from the form and movement of the grapevine. Vinifera references growth, resilience, cultivation, and transformation—the same qualities that have shaped Niagara’s agricultural and wine sectors over generations.
The sculpture takes the form of a striking oversized cluster of grapes composed of 110 polished stainless steel spheres. Its mirror-like surfaces invite viewers to see themselves and their surroundings reflected in the artwork, creating an interactive relationship between sculpture, landscape, and community. Positioned on the grounds of the Arts Centre, Vinifera is intended as a year-round landmark for residents and visitors alike.
“This project reflects the power of public art to animate place, spark conversation, and deepen our connection to community,” said Rima Boles, Director of the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre. “We are deeply grateful to Paul Bosc for his generosity and to James Cameron Smith for creating a work that celebrates the spirit of this community.”
“My parents believed deeply in community, generosity, and the importance of giving back,” said Paul Bosc. “It is meaningful to honour their legacy through a work of public art that celebrates the land, history, and people of Niagara-on-the-Lake.”
“It was an honour to create a sculpture inspired by the story of this region,” said James Cameron Smith. “I hope Vinifera invites reflection on the land, the people who cultivated it, and the shared experiences that continue to grow here.”
The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony.

About Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre
The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is the art hub that connects our community by providing “art for all”. Located on the banks of the Niagara River in a heritage building that formerly supplied water to Niagara-on-the-Lake (hence our name); the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre offers year-round visual arts programs, exhibitions and events that engage over 19,000 participants annually.
The Arts Centre provides art classes, workshops and camps in a variety of media for all ages and skill levels taught by professional and emerging artists and educators. Our galleries feature solo and group exhibitions by contemporary artists from across Ontario. Our events celebrate art and artists.
Like many local not-for-profits, the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre does not receive ongoing operational funding and relies on the generous support of donors, sponsors, and grants, and a dedicated team of volunteers to sustain our programs and community impact. This support allows us to provide a number of free, accessible programs which reduce barriers for vulnerable youth, seniors and families to appreciate and engage with art.
