Description

This talk focuses on transitions in Niagara's farming community away from traditional practices to more modern ones, such as the change from animal power to the internal combustion engine, changes in the animals and crops farmed, and the increasing inclusion of women in the Society's activities. We will see how the Great War and social and political changes in the 1920's affected the Society. The Minutes offer a surprisingly detailed view into the workings of a major institution in the Town and Township of Niagara during times of widespread change. Tom Smith is a retired professor of English at Penn State University in the United States. He began transcribing the Minutes of the Niagara Agricultural Society 1890-1927 during summer visits to Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2018 and 2019, completing the work after moving here in 2022. He is now a permanent resident awaiting approval of his application for Canadian citizenship. This Lecture Series has been generously sponsored by
